PayPal & POLITICO Lead Discussions on the State of Small Business

United States of Entrepreneurs Panel

On Thursday, May 9th, PayPal and POLITICO partnered in producing in-depth conversations about the state of small business in the face of an evolving economy in alignment with PayPal Small Business Month. The event titled, United States of Entrepreneurs, focused on the tremendous opportunity that small businesses are afforded by the growth of digital commerce, particularly underserved entrepreneurs such as women and minority owned businesses.

The event included two panel discussions highlighting diverging perspectives from the point of view of entrepreneurs in the first, and a more policy focused discussion on the second.  Featured speakers on the policy panel included Representative Bill Huizenga (R-MI), who sits on the Financial Services Committee and Representative Andy Kim (D-NJ), on the Small Business Committee while the first panel included entrepreneurs as well as Karen Kerrigan, Chair of Small Business Roundtable. Ben White, POLITICO’s Chief Economic Correspondent, moderated both panels.

Between the two panels, Richard Nash, VP of Global Government Relations, delivered keynote remarks that addressed how PayPal is thinking about these small business issues. Richard stressed how small businesses are a part of PayPal’s DNA and critical to our core mission of democratizing financial services. As digital commerce grows, the needs of small business are evolving which means we should be looking for ways to address those changing needs. Richard highlighted the full suite of products and brands that PayPal has been expanding to do just that while also noting the challenges that exist. To close, he spoke about access to capital and cross-border trade as two opportunities for policymakers to break down some of the barriers that still inhibit small businesses from reaching their full potential.

In addition to being widely attended in person by stakeholders from Capitol Hill, trade associations, academics and others, the event was also live-streamed on, reaching nationwide audience. Aligning with PayPal Small Business Month, this event was a fantastic opportunity for PayPal to further demonstrate thought leadership in small business empowerment and facilitate an important conversation on how to further enable underserved entrepreneurs.
